I am not uninformed or a novice but I bought a small Toshiba tablet/laptop with 32 GB almost 2 years ago. Such things as a clean install, work arounds and so forth. That is the last thing you would want to put on such a user. They just rely on uninformed novice users attracted by a low price, and who will get into trouble very soon after purchase. In my view such Laptops are unfit for purpose and should not be made. Grab the Media Creation Tool from the Microsoft site to produce a USB stick with the latest OS on. The benefit of doing the former is you will have a vanilla installation without all the unnecessary HP rubbish.

You can then do a clean installation via USB stick of Win10 Creators Update or (subject to space) an in-place upgrade. There are a couple of options available to you - the preferred one IMO would be to put an SD card in and use that for storage of files. Not ideal but this is what happens with cheap low-end equipment.

Beyond that is obviously going to require manual intervention. Anyone still on 1607 right now will still be getting security updates until March next year at least. Creators Update is a feature update (new OS version).

You can install critical updates though is the point I was trying to make. If you can't install critical updates and a new build then that's why I felt that it wasn't fit for purpose. The prospective owner has already fallen foul of scammers once and I don't want it to happen again. At the end of the day you still have a laptop that powers on, connects to WiFi and displays web pages.

This is no different than purchasing a cheap Android tablet or phone and finding it cant go up to Nougat without extra work. I think you are misusing the term fit-for-purpose. Use a USB stick or flash card to perform the update. Strictly speaking even 1511 still gets security updates for another month or 2. It's delivered with a very old build of Win 10 and needs hefty updates before it can safely be used.Can'tly/install all required updates to ensure it's safe for an 80+ year old friend as it fails due to lack of space on the hard drive. Will have to try returning it as it is not up to the job it's designed for, surfing the web and checking emails. Adding storage temporarily using an SD card is an option.īefore I engage in trying to do anything I felt it appropriate to create a recovery drive on a spare Sata drive for the friend for the inevitable day she hoses the machine.Guess what poxy thing wouldn't create a recovery because the primary C Drive didn't have enough spare room. What a pile of kak For an extra £80 she could by an ASUS Proper laptop with 1 TB Hard drive and an optical drive.I've owned one for four years and it runs very nicely, upgraded from Win 8 to Win Creator's update without any problems.

I'm currently trying to set up a new laptop with a 32 GBSSD drive. The drive is smaller than any laptop I've ever owner so how can it be sold as fit for Windows 10.This machine shipped with a very old build of Windows10 and installing the critical updates is fast filling the drive, what is one supposed to do?If you can't install updates due to the size limits what is the point and why don't they ship with a decent sized hard drive.Īlso set the system restore as small as possible and delete all current restore is right, you can't always recover enough space to do the update, even if you delete all the crap you like. However, this isn't easy for a non techie user. The answer is as mentioned above do a clean install with the latest version of Windows 10. Unfortunately, Windows has no similar option.

Apple got around the problem by deleting apps temporarily, and then reinstalling them automatically afterwards. On an iPad with only 16GB of storage, and less than 8GB available, it has been hard to apply iOS updates. It's delivered with a very old build of Win 10 and needs hefty updates before it can safely be used. Can't apply/install all required updates to ensure it's safe for an 80+ year old friend as it fails due to lack of space on the hard drive. Will have to try returning it as it is not up to the job it's designed for, surfing the web and checking emails.īasically, it's a tablet with a keyboard. If it's Brand New, the supplier might accept a return under a No Quibble policy, but legally, it's fit for purpose.
